This is the kinda movie that would typically give the "National Organization for Women" a titty attack because every single woman in the movie is an airhead. That's okay though, because the men in the movie aren't any smarter. As a matter of fact, they're worse. MUCH worse. I guess the only group who may be offended by the depiction of the people in this movie are the ones who live in Mt. Rose, Minnesota. Their accents are like the people in the movie "Fargo," so if the accents bugged you in THAT movie, you may wanna skip "Drop Dead Gorgeous."
The two main contestants in the movie are played by Denise Richards (she was in "Starship Troopers," but she's more known for her role in "Wild Things"... mostly because of the very interesting sex scene she was in) and Kirsten Dunst (she was phenomenal as "Claudia," the little girl in "Interview with the Vampire"). Denise Richards didn't really have much to do in the movie but pout and look bitchy. The movie is mostly about Kirsten Dunst's (try saying the word "Dunst's"... it's a tough one, innit?) character. She was very charming in the movie, and it was hard not to like her. Kirstie Alley is also in the movie, and she has a pretty big role. She's pretty good in the movie. Ellen Barkin is in it too, and she's just great.
The script was written by Lona Williams, herself a former Minnesota beauty pageant contestant. I imagine that since she has that experience behind her, the satire of the beauty pageant is all based on what really happens behind the scenes of those events. This is her feature film debut. The director was Michael Patrick Jann, he was a director and a series regular for "The State," but this is his feature film debut. I liked the movie. It amused me, but it wasn't hilarious. It wasn't non-stop laughs. It wasn't "American Pie." But I was entertained.
There are some really funny moments in "Drop Dead Gorgeous," and
Kirsten Dunst was really great. I liked it, but not as much as I'd
hoped. It could be that the raunchy movies from the last few months
are more my thing, I dunno. The end of the movie was really good,
but it seemed as though I had to get past several endings in order
to get to the real one. Still, I enjoyed the movie and unless
you're a resident of Mt. Rose, Minnesota, you'll probably get a
kick out of it, too.
Wanna bitch to me about my review? Perhaps you wanna let me know
that my reviews are the most accurate in existence (well, they ARE!).
Either way, E-Mail me to gimmie your thoughts.
